We can ensure that the Gift of Music is available to all students

Music has always been a part of my life. I began playing the piano at age 4 and then learned the recorder in elementary school. Since then, I have learned to play seven additional instruments and music has been an invaluable part of my life. Once in college, I decided to pursue a career in counseling and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. While in graduate school, I saw the need for music where I did my internship at a battered women's shelter. The children and women in the shelter had very low self-esteem so I decided to teach them music. I was able to witness first hand how music transformed their lives. The children and women were able to feel a sense of accomplishment for the first time and were able to learn how to feel proud of themselves. This is proof that music can change lives no matter the person's age. As a counselor, I have seen music help children learn to focus and improve their attention span, improve self-esteem, help with behavior problems, and help improve emotional status.
